Can Do supports electricity suppliers in the energy transition
For some time now, companies from the energy generation and distribution sector have been pushing the expansion of alternative energy generation - and the current upheavals in the energy market underline how important this path is. For Germany as a business location, but also for private households. But the energy transition is not limited to electricity generation: The distribution grids ("power grids") of the utilities are also facing major challenges. Some examples:
- Distribution grids have to cope with large fluctuations when, for example, more energy is fed in from PV systems on sunny days - this requires, among other things, appropriate transformer technology.
- The more electricity is used (heating, electric cars), the more stable the grids need to be.
- Some grid operators produce energy themselves - and need to integrate wind turbines into the grid, for example.
- The more fragmented and localised power generation becomes, the more important smart grids become.
- Despite all the digitalisation, the maintenance of existing grids must not suffer.
Multi-project management with Can Do for MITNETZ STROM
The distribution network operator MITNETZ STROM (Mitteldeutsche Netzgesellschaft Strom mbH) in Cottbus ensures a safe and reliable supply of electricity to more than 2.2 million people. The power grid under management has a length of more than 73,000 kilometres. MITNETZ's 1,500 employees are not only involved in day-to-day operations, they are also shaping the future of electricity supply through a wide range of challenging projects.
In order to raise MITNETZ's multi-project management to a new level, MITNETZ STROM and Can Do worked together to configure the Can Do software specifically for grid operators/energy suppliers. Particularly noteworthy is the uniqueness of multi-project management, which enables portfolio management to control and monitor deadlines, costs and resources of construction and maintenance projects. Through automation and artificial intelligence, it is possible to continuously track and follow up on projects. And all of this in the context of the annual budget and available resources.
One of the features developed for MITNETZ: defined projects are imported from the asset management system via an interface into Can Do and then automatically planned according to the HOAI approach (standard market fee approach) according to project phases and annual slices, as well as assigned to the required resources. An automated comparison with the total available resources and a risk assessment are also carried out.
The system helps portfolio managers manage and prioritise project execution across regions and sectors through dashboards, pre-built reports, traffic lights, portfolio simulation and risk alerts. The Can Do software replaces manual work in Excel project lists and can also be used for forecasting and planning.
Our energy landscape is changing - and energy suppliers or distribution network operators are faced with major tasks that go far beyond sustainable power generation. Can Do GmbH supports companies with a version of the (multi-)project management software Can Do that is specially adapted to their challenges and makes the digitalisation and transition of the energy industry much easier!
