Purpose of the Function

In the classic method, public holidays are maintained centrally and uniformly in the system.
This approach is suitable when all employees are located in the same country or region and therefore share identical public holidays.

The holidays are entered once by the administrator in the system configuration and automatically apply to all resources.
This ensures that no working capacity is planned on official public holidays.

The method is simple, low-maintenance, and reliable – it is particularly suitable for organizations with a homogeneous location structure (e.g., all employees based in Germany).

Recommendation for Use

Recommended

The classic method offers a stable and transparent solution as long as there are no regional differences in public holidays.
It is especially advantageous when only one location or time zone is relevant and no country-specific differentiation is required.

Implementation in Can Do

Public holidays are maintained in the system configuration and are automatically interpreted by the system in the same way as weekends.

In the various Can Do apps, they are therefore displayed in grey shading, just like Saturdays and Sundays.

If a work package is planned across a public holiday, its total duration is automatically extended by the affected day.
The value of the “Duration” field does not change, since it represents only the number of working days of the package.

Example:
If a public holiday (e.g., Thursday) is defined system-wide and a work package with a duration of 5 days starts on Monday, it will not end on Friday but on the following Monday.
The software automatically recognizes that the week contains only four working days due to the holiday and extends the timeline accordingly by one calendar day.

Configuration of Public Holidays

The maintenance of public holidays is not performed by users, but exclusively by the system administrator.
The administrator enters the public holiday data centrally in the server’s system configuration.

After the update, a system restart is required to apply the new holidays throughout the system.
Subsequently, Can Do automatically performs a recalculation of all affected work packages and planning elements, ensuring that all timelines and durations are adjusted correctly according to the updated holiday definitions.
